Ranting and raving to follow. Beware.
Here’s the thing: Chick-Fil-A can do what it wants with its money. If you don’t want to support them, and thereby support their causes, then please don’t give them your business. It’s ridiculous that the mayor of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. would try to bar a company from opening a location basically because they exercise free speech. Obviously Menino can’t legally do anything to prevent Chick-Fil-A from opening in Boston, but still. It’s a double standard. There are plenty of other companies and organizations that have a history of anti-gay policies. If Chick-Fil-A is to be called out based on their views, then Menino should make statements like this on all of the others.
The Salvation Army, Urban Outfitters/Free People/Anthropologie, and Target all have histories of donating to anti-gay causes. There are two Urban Outfitters stores, one Anthropologie, and one Free People location in Boston. There are obviously Salvation Army branches, and no doubt Boy Scout organizations in Boston. Target is now opening smaller urban stores in major metropolitan areas across the country. Let’s see how long it is before they open in Boston with no trouble.
Also, if there is no place for discrimination on Boston’s Freedom Trail, will you now prevent all Boy Scouts from visiting all of the historic sites along the Trail? They too are a vocally anti-gay organization.
I can say nothing more than this: Practice what you preach. Do not publicly blast one anti-gay organization, and yet turn a blind eye on the others.3 notes
